Simmental Champion Bull
March 2011
In the Simmental breed judging at Wagin Woolorama 2011, the champion bull ribbon was awarded to Bullock Hills Erebus, exhibited by the Patterson family, Bullock Hills.
The 1090kg, March 2009 drop bull expressed all the correct credentials the judge Mr Cabassi was looking for. Mr Cabassi said the bull had fantastic carcase attributes and was very balanced.
"He is square and wide behind and has a deep but long body," he said.
"You cannot fault his temperament and he is a clear pick for me."

Bullockhills Erebus sold for $8000 to Willandra Simmental Stud and Topweight Simmental Stud, Brunswick Supreme Bull Sale
February 2011
Once again leading the
Simmental breed in terms of
price was the Patterson
family’s Bullock Hills stud,
Katanning, when their second
bull to walk into the ring,
Bullock Hills Erebus (ET),
was knocked down for
$8000.
The powerful, softmuscled,
March 2009-drop
bull caused a spirited bidding
battle across the shed and in
the end was knocked down to
Charles and Beryl Cowcher,
Willandra Simmental stud,
Williams, and Audrey and
David Weightman, Topweight
Simmental stud, Margaret
River.
The hefty 1030kg Bullock
Hills bull was sired by BHR
Draco and out of Langton
Gate Autumn Girl (P).
Along with having a top
pedigree, the long-bodied sire
boasted figures of +3.3 for
birthweight, +26, +41 for 200
and 400-day weights,
+124cm2 for EMA, +3 for rib
fat, +4 for rump fat and +2.2
for IMF.
Audrey Weightman, who
had recently bought a
Simmental sire from the
Willandra stud, said she had
purchased two different types
of bulls so she could mix and
match and get the best of
both worlds.
“The Bullock Hills bull is a
true stud sire prospect and
has plenty of length, weight
and is an outcross to anything
we have in our herd,” she
said.
Erebus will be used overWeightmans herd.
Charles Cowcher said they
bought the bull in partnership
for its overall softness,
growth figures and South
African genetics.
“Erebus is very sound on
its feet and legs, smooth
through the shoulders and has
plenty of eye pigmentation,”
he said.
“He has an excellent eye
muscle figure and will be
used over our second and
third calvers.”
Also taking a liking to the
Bullock Hills bulls and
paying good money was
regular client Brad Gardner,
Mumballup.
Mr Gardner secured the
very long, easy doing Bullock
Hills Enforcer (P) at $5250.
Enforcer, which was sired
by BHR Draco, weighed
848kg, had an EMA of
103cm2 and EBVs of +2.1 for
birthweight, +11 for milk,
+25, +35 and +33 for 200,
400 and 600-day weights.
RH & SJ Manning,
Busselton, weren’t leaving
empty handed taking home

for $5000.
Sired by Grimich Park
Primus, the very deep,
stylish, May-born youngster
scanned 107cm2 for EMA.
Bullock Hills also sold
another three bulls at $4500
to finish the day selling all 12
bulls under the hammer at an
average of $4583, the top for

Once again there was a fine line-up of 23 Simmental bull on offer this year and following last year's trend, in terms of numbers of bulls offered, it was the second biggest breed.
Despite the drop of six studs representing the breed to only three, there was definitely no sign of a drop in the quality of stock presented on the day.
Providing evidence to this was when 14 bulls sold under the hammer at an average of $3571, which was up $133 on last year's sale with 16 of the 24 bulls offered sold.
Leading the Simmental breed in terms of price was the Patterson family's Bullock Hills stud, Katanning, when lot 77, Bullock Hills Dallas (P), made his mark in the ring and received the breed's top price of the sale at $6250. The deep, soft June 2008-drop calf, cause a spirited bidding battle across the shed and in the end was knocked down to Woonallee Simmental stud breeders, Tom and Lizzy Baker, South Australia.
The beautiful Simmental bull was sired by Bullock Hills Buster (P) and out of Bullock Hills Ylana (P). Along with having a top pedigree, the impressive bull boasted figures of +3.3 for birthweight, +20, +39 and +43 for 200, 400 and 600-day weights, +24 for carcase weight, +1.0 for EMA, +0.2 for retail beef yield and +0.3 for IMF.
Mr Baker, whose Woonallee Simmental stud holds a perfect strike rate of never passing in a bull at its annual on-property sale, said it was the impressive genetic combination that attracted him to Dallas.
"He came highly recommended and was a visually outstanding bull with a great genetic mix," Mr Baker said.
"His appealing features were a good neck extension, structure and a great carcase."
Mr Baker said Dallas will be used in his stud herd to help produce bulls and females for his own on-property sale.
Along with selling the top price Simmental bull Bullock Hills also sold another two moderate framed, soft, easy-fleshing bulls at $4000.
The first specimen to sell at this price tag was a 893kg bull, Bullock Hills Dipper (P), when he was snapped up by D Mondello, Badgingarra.
Dipper who showed great depth and a docile temperament had EBVs of +4.1 for birthweight, +19, +26 and +35 for 200, 400 and 600-day weights, +6 for milk, and +0.8 for retail beef yield.
The second bull to make $4000 was an early-maturing bull, Bullock Hills Dusty (P), when he found a home with WD Dellabosca, Southern Cross.
The 853kg expressed figures of +2.5 for birthweight, +6 for milk, +0.9 EMA and +0.5 for retail beef yield.
Other clients to secure outstanding performance-bred Bullock Hills sires between $3500 and $3750 respectfully were AC Wltham, Broomhill, and Kalmer Pastoral Company, Beverley.
By the end of the Bullock Hills offering the stud had cleared 10 of the 11 bulls at an average of $3750, which was up $361 on last year's average.
